Biography

Julia Grieshofer is a Chartered Psychologist, researcher, and specialist in performing arts psychology. Her work sits at the intersection of clinical practice, original research, and deep knowledge of the performing arts world — offering performers a genuinely specialist psychological service that understands the unique demands of a performance career.

Julia holds a PhD in Psychoanalytic Studies from University College London, where her doctoral research explored the creative work of the actor and the role of resilience as a protective factor for mental health. This original research identified emotion regulation as the central variable in performer psychological wellbeing — and forms the foundation of everything offered at the Performer Clinic.

Julia is clinically trained in Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). She is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and holds an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Since December 2020, Julia has led the Psychology Module on the MSc in Performing Arts Medicine at University College London — a role in which she has fostered international research partnerships, supervised MSc dissertations, and supported two supervisees in presenting their research at the 41st Annual PAMA International Symposium in New York. One of her supervisees received the BAPAM Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement.

Julia has a longstanding relationship with the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM), having worked directly for the organisation and maintaining strong ongoing affiliations. She holds an Honorary Fellowship at University College London (2023) and continues to be an active contributor to the performing arts medicine community internationally.

Alongside the Performer Clinic, Julia holds a senior clinical leadership role as Head of Service at Anna Freud Centre — one of the UK’s leading child and adolescent mental health institutions — reflecting the breadth and depth of her clinical expertise.
